Fried Frish(Dalagang Bukid) and Sauteed Bitter Gourd wit Egg.

Thinking what food/dish to prepare gives you so much headache as sometime you feel that you are running out of ideas
especially if you are with your family. I remember when we were young, I was normally asked by my Mom what would be my preferred dinner or lunch. Then, I always replied as saying ‘ika namu ing bahala’ you decide for as long as it’s meat since i don’t prefer
veggies that time. Now as I grew older, i realized why my Mom asked me those simple but serious question. Simple question  of asking
would be our dinner/lunch thinking that she wants to serve what is best for us. I guess that make sense in the end.

Now going back to present time, me and my fiance is thinking what would be our lunch on that today. So we’ve decided, ok let’s go back
to basic, make it more native, simple and healthy. So we’ve come up of 2 Dishes,  Fried Dalagang Bukid(Yellow Tail Fusilier) and Sauteed Gourd or Bitter Melon.

We were actually curious why they called the fish ‘Dalagang Bukid’ since the literal translation is Single Farm – doesn’t make sense right?
I know you’re eyes are rolling right now and I bet you want to go to Mr. Google and find what is the real meaning. Now, we made a little
research and here’s what we found out:

The fish Dalagang bukid got its name because of its red underside which resembles a saya or tapis of farm girls in the fields.

Red is a Filipino favorite esp. in Southern tagalog areas. Even men’s trousers were common to be colored red in Rizal and Laguna provinces but calling them Binatang Bukid defeats Pinoy romaticism.

The fish’s color and pattern tells that it is a reef fish and so does its bones that are not so rigid making them slow but manueverable. May sub-specie pa ito na flatter at hindi masyadong cylindrical ang katawan sa mga lugar ng Visayas na maaaring magsabi na taal ang mga ganitong uri sa mas-malalalim na katubigan at masisikip na coral colonies.

Now, let’s get the ball rolling and here’s the ingredients:

Fried Fish – Dalagang Bukid

1/4 kilo Dalagang Bukid
Salt and Pepper
Cooking Oil

Sauteed Bitter Gourd with Egg

1/3 kilo of Bitter Gourd
3 Eggs
Onion
Garlic
Cooking Oil
2 pieces Tomato
Salt and Pepper

Here’s the instruction:

Fried Fish – Dalagang Bukid

1. Clean the fish inside and out with fresh tap water.

2. Put Salt and Pepper

3. Preheat tha cooking Pan, once heated put the cooking oil.

4. Once you’re sure that cooking oil is hot, carefully put the fish on the cooking oil.

5. Simmer and wait for it until it’s golder brown)around 5-10 minutes cooking time.

6. Once done, put the fish on a tissue paper so the oil will be rinsed out.

Sauteed Bitter Gourd with Egg

1. Slice ampalaya or bitter melon thinly ( put in a bowl with water to lessen the bitter taste ).
What we were thought to do is we carefully mash the bitter gourd along with salt and water. It’s really
effective in minimizing that bitter taste especially for kids. Trust me, I’ve been into that situation.

2. In a pan, saute garlic, onion, and tomatoes until the tomatoes have juiced out. While doing this, add salt and pepper to taste.

3. Add ampalaya and 1/2 cup of water. Let it simmer for 5 minutes.

4. When ampalaya is quite tender, stir in the beaten eggs and cook for another 5 minutes. Then it’s ready to be served.

Note: Do not over cooked the vegetable so it will still have a distinct crunchy taste when you eat.

Yallah!..Enjoy your meal!

See you on our next post.. cheers!
